Until recently Mozambique has had a very limited ability to diagnose, and treat MDR-TB. With the scale up of Xpert, and the development of increased TB culture and drug sensitivity testing capacity in Mozambique, combined with significant financial support from the Global Fund for expensive MDR-TB treatment regimens, Mozambique has made the treatment of MDR-TB a national health priority. With financial support from USAID and the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, HAI supports an in-country technical advisor dedicated to working with the National TB Program to strengthen the current MDR-TB program. This effort focuses on expanding diagnostic tools such as Xpert and TB culture, developing an accurate MDR-TB database, updating MDR-TB treatment guidelines, workforce trainings, and program performance monitoring. Given the commitment of the Mozambican MOH, the significant financial support from the Global Fund, PEPFAR and other partners, and a host of new diagnostic platforms and new drug regimens for MDR-TB, this is a unique opportunity to better serve our Mozambican MDR-TB patients by building a model MDR-TB program. This grant is supported by USAID and The Union.
